Although Campbell is not part of the technological hub that dominates much of the San Jose area, it is the home of Pierre Omidvar – the creator of eBay. The town has changed quite a bit since it’s initial settlement in 1851, but you can still see traces of the original orchards in Campbell’s historic downtown.
We love Campbell because it combines the charm of a pedestrian-friendly town with an up-and-coming nightlight – great restaurants, shops, and clubs all in one place! There are also museums, art galleries, and gardens for those seeking a little culture.
It’s also family-friendly, with a comprehensive community center. The Campbell Community Center has a skate park, sports facilities, and venues for concerts and plays. This is a great destination if you are on your way to the Santa Cruz Mountains.
History of Campbell:
The founder of Campbell was Benjamin Campbell. He moved west in 1846, and bought 160 acres of land to grow hay and grain in 1851. This plot of farmland is now historic Downtown Campbell. After Benjamin Campbell sold some of his land to the railroad in the 1870s, the subdivision became a shipping center for the fruit that grows so readily in Northern California’s temperate climate. With canneries and cooperatives like the Campbell Fruit Growers’ Union popping up all around Campbell, this rail center became very important to the economic growth of this area.
As the canning industry grew larger and more prosperous, the town of Campbell expanded with it. The cornerstone of Campbell’s economy was the Bank of Campbell – established in 1895 in what is now called the Farley Building. Another notable historic building is the Campbell Union High School, which became a community center after the school closed in 1980.
As of 2010, Campbell had a population of 39,349. The population density was 6,685.2 people per square mile.
